Lanciert wurde diese Domainendung am 16. Oktober 1997 und wird vom Ministerium f\u00fcr Kommunikation und Informationstechnologie, dem Ministry of Communications and IT mit Sitz in Kabul verwaltet. Das Ministerium hat die Domainendung zur Verwaltung indes an das sogenannte Afghanistan Network Information Center \u00fcbergeben. \n\nVergaberichtlinien und Nutzung \n\nDie Domainendung .af war zun\u00e4chst nur von einer einzigen Privatperson aus Kabul genutzt worden. Die IANA verlor im Laufe des afghanischen B\u00fcrgerkriegs allerdings den Kontakt zu dieser Person. Es wird vermutet, dass diese Person im B\u00fcrgerkrieg umkam. Die Registrierung von neuen Adressen wurde von IANA zun\u00e4chst ausgesetzt, aber im September 2020 aufgrund der Zusammenarbeit mit der afghanischen \u00dcbergangsregierung wieder aufgenommen. Der Zugang zu Domains mit der Endung .af ist heute auch Privatpersonen mit einem Wohnsitz in Afghanistan unter dieser Endung einer Domain registrieren k\u00f6nnen. Privatpersonen und auch Unternehmen mit Hauptsitz oder Niederlassung in Afghanistan sind dabei die Top-Level-Domains vorbehalten. F\u00fcr Unternehmen, Internet-Provider und Bildungseinrichtungen mit Sitz au\u00dferhalb von Afghanistan gibt es auf zweiter Ebene zahlreiche spezialisierte Domains. \n\nBedeutung\n\nDa Afghanistan bis heute unter dem Schutz der Vereinten Nationen steht, weil die Sicherheitslage dort seit der Demokratisierung des Landes und dem Ende der Taliban-Herrschaft sehr unsicher ist, gibt es kaum ausl\u00e4ndische Unternehmen, die in diesem Land investieren. Dabei hat die Islamische Republik Afghanistan als Binnenstaat zwischen Zentral- und S\u00fcdasien auch heute noch eine sehr gro\u00dfe strategische Bedeutung. Das Land grenzt an den Iran, wie auch an Turkmenistan, an Usbekistan und Tadschikistan. Alle diese L\u00e4nder sind selbst \"Pulverf\u00e4sser\", ebenso wie das afghanische Nachbarland Pakistan. Zudem grenzt auch China an Afghanistan. \n\nDie Bedeutung der Domainendung .af ist aus dem Grund auch sehr gering, da nur wenige der rund 34 Millionen Einwohner Zugang zum WWW haben. Die Einwohner des Landes geh\u00f6ren dabei einer Vielzahl von ethnischen Gruppen und St\u00e4mme an. Zudem ist die Infrastruktur des Landes noch immer stark
