The .ae domain is the country specific Top Level Domain of the United Arab Emirates. It is not necessarily suitable for all Internet projects, because the special conditions of the Arab Emirates must be observed. On the other hand, the country TLD .ae is very well suited for companies and business presences that cooperate with Arab partners.
Arab domain extensions .ae for the United Arab Emirates
The domain extension .ae was introduced in 1992, making it one of the oldest ccTLDs worldwide. Since 1995 Etisalat has been managing the administration and has installed its own UAEnic. In 2008 the Arabic domain ending was transferred to the state regulatory authority.
Domains on second and third level
.ae domains are also assigned on second and third level. However, if you want to register a domain at the third level, you must be a citizen of the UAE or have a company based there. Second level domains like .co.ae may only be used for companies and .org.ae accordingly only for non-profit organisations.
The transfer and change of ownership is possible, an authcode is required. For the security of the domain a transfer lock can be used. It is important to note that umlauts are not allowed for this domain. On the other hand, the domain may only consist of digits as long as at least three characters or numbers are used. Another special feature concerns hyphens, which must not be placed at the beginning or end. The duplication of hyphens is also not allowed.
A period between one and five years can be chosen for new registrations. The domain will then always be renewed annually. The cancellation period is 22 days before the expiration of the Arabic domain.
Special features
The United Emirates have their own ideas about how their TLD is used. So the registrant has to make sure that the chosen domain does not violate the rights of third parties, but also that it does not violate the law of the United Arab Emirates. Social, cultural and especially religious aspects must also be observed or respected. These include, for example, sexually-sounding domain names. In such a case, it may well happen that the domain is deleted and the holder has no right to reimbursement.
