The domain extension .me is the Top Level Domain from Montenegro.

The domain extension was created after the disintegration of Yugoslavia in September 2007 and has been registerable since July 2008. The operators of this domain extension are the company ME-net from Montenegro, Registrar Go Daddy, the Irish registration company Afilias and the Montenegro-based consortium doME. The operators of the domain extension .me operate jointly under the URL domain.me.

A broad public became aware of this newly available domain extension through an advertisement broadcast in the USA. Translated into the German language, the motto of this commercial was "You are not a company. You are a person. Get the right web address".

It follows from this motto that this domain extension is used in a similar way to the .io and .tv extensions. It does not make any special reference to the country of Montenegro, but is used because of its linguistic meaning.

Registrations for this domain extension are possible on both the second and third level. Any person worldwide may register this domain ending on the second level. The allocation of this domain ending is fully automatic.

The combination of first names with the domain ending was not possible immediately after the introduction. In April 2010, dotME auctioned off such internet addresses. The country-specific domain ending of Montenegro is perfectly suited for any private internet presence. The ending emphasizes the personal character of communities, video blogs, podcasts, blogs and homepages.

This domain extension was in great demand immediately after its introduction, because it allows the creation of exciting internet addresses, for example kiss.me and similar names. Just two weeks after the official launch, 100,000 domains were registered. 12 months later, 530,000 domains with this ending were registered in 200 different countries.

Currently, most popular domain names ending in .me have already been registered. However, there is still a chance to acquire one of these popular names, as several domain owners are offering their domains for sale in the meantime.

By far the most popular domain extension is the one in the USA, with around 53 percent. The domain extension became known nationwide when the name meet.me was sold to its new owner for an absolute record amount of 450,000 US dollars.
