Founded in 1947, the United States Air Force (US Airforce or USAF for short) is the air force of the United States of America. This branch of the US Armed Forces is the second strongest of the five branches. The main mission of the force is to ensure the defense of the United States, in air and space. The headquarters is located in the Pentagon in the US state of Virginia. The Armed Forces includes more than 329,000 troops, including about 64,000 officers, and an additional 149,000 personnel. The force's inventory includes more than 5,300 aircraft and more than 400 missiles. The USAF maintains 85 military airfields around the world, 72 of which are on American soil and several in Europe.
