The domain extension .biz is a generic top-level domain (gTLD), which is intended for businesses. The domain was launched on 26 June in the summer of 2001. The domain extension name stands for the first syllable in the English word "business" (= business). The American company NeuStar has been administering the domain since its inception in 2001, but the new domains are registered with Neulevel, where NeuStar owns more than 90 percent of the shares.
Originally, the domain was only supposed to be a kind of replacement domain for all commercial companies that no longer received a .com domain extension with their favorite name. Since access to the Internet became easier and easier shortly before the turn of the millennium and therefore more websites were created with a domain, more and more people registered the domain extension .com. As a result, there were hardly any free names to choose from in the early 2000s, and a company could rarely use its favorite name for its own website. To remedy this problem, similar addresses were created for the same purpose, for example the domain extension .biz.
This domain extension, like the .com domain as well, is only available for commercial purposes. However, the domain extension does not receive the desired interest from the public. Regardless of the public interest, the domain has fallen far short of expectations and does not reach nearly as many users as the .com address. In 2017, the domain still reached just over 2 million registered websites.
The allocation of the domain .biz is completely unrestricted as long as the registrant uses the domain for a commercial enterprise. No residence or stay in a certain country is necessary to get the domain. Any natural or legal person may apply for this domain at Neulevel. However, in the worst case a registration can be contested if the registrant does not want to pursue an unrestricted serious commercial purpose with this domain extension. The successful registration takes on average no longer than five working days.
