Brittany is a region in the northwest of France and has Rennes as its capital. The region is the largest peninsula of France and represents the westernmost foothills of mainland Europe north of the Iberian Peninsula. Thus, the region is also located directly on the Atlantic Ocean and is under the influence of the Gulf Stream as far as the climate is concerned. Accordingly, the climate is oceanic. In Brittany, temperatures are correspondingly mild. The culture of the region is strongly influenced by rites from the Neolithic Age. However, there are also cultural similarities with other Celtic regions, not only in terms of language, but also in terms of culture. The inhabitants of Brittany are very proud of their culture. An expression of their special culture on the soil of France is also the domain extension .bzh. It is the top-level domain of Brittany and the Breton culture.
History and awarding
The .bzh domain extension was launched on 10 May 2013. The idea of launching a top-level domain for Brittany came from Christian Ménard, once a member of the French parliament, back in 2004. It was ultimately Mikael Bodlore-Penlaez who imitated an online petition via the website Geobreizh.com. This mobilized the public and got the local authorities in Brittany to support this project. Finally, in 2007, a feasibility study of the project was launched by the Regional Council of Brittany. In 2008, the first step was finally taken and a formal structure was created to support the Brittany application for the .bzh domain extension. The commissioned association ultimately formulated the application and raised the necessary funds. The online petition received more than 21,000 supporter signatures. The .bzh domain extension is intended for companies and private individuals who are based in Brittany or have connections to this region. This means that neither companies nor private individuals necessarily have to have a company or residence in Brittany.
Use and meaning
The domain extension .bzh is ultimately used by numerous companies and private individuals. Internationally, the domain extension is not very important, but in the region of Brittany it is.
