Meaning and history

The domain extension .com is a generic top-level domain. The domain extension was the first of its kind and was already introduced on 1 January in 1985. The registry Verisign administers the address and allocates the domains to interested parties. "com" is an abbreviation for the English "commerce" or "commercial" (in German = geschäftlich).
The allocation of the domain is completely unrestricted. Any natural or legal person in the world may register such a domain extension. No residence or domicile in a certain country is necessary. The only requirement is that the website has a commercial intention. The allocation of Verisign normally does not take more than a few minutes. The domain must be between two and 63 characters long and may contain German umlauts, among other things. In addition, the domain should soon also support Arabic, Hebrew, Cyrillic and Chinese, for example.
Since the domain .com was introduced as the first domain worldwide in 1985, the domain quickly gained a great and worldwide awareness. The first awarded domain worldwide belonged to the American company Symbolics. The high level of awareness has led to the .com domain extension outranking other top-level domains (e.g. .org or .net) and country code top-level domains to become the domain with the most registered websites in the entire world. In February, 100 million registered domains with the .com domain extension were reported for the first time. Currently, there are already almost 150 million registered sites with such a domain extension.
This high level of awareness and the numerous registered pages mean that hardly any short and easy-to-remember pages are still available on the Internet with the .com domain extension. This was one of the reasons why ICANN introduced new top-level domains to make more domain names available again (e.g. .biz). However, these new domains did not achieve the desired success and the number of registered .com domains continues to grow.
Domains with such an extension are considered very valuable and are often resold for a lot of money. Thus, it is not uncommon that rare and popular names with the domain extension change hands for several million dollars.
