The domain extension .cr is the country-specific top-level domain from Costa Rica, which translates from Spanish as "Rich Coast". The South American country borders on Panama in the south and Nicaragua in the north. The domain extension .cr was launched on September 10, 1990 and is administered by the NIC Costa Rica, a division within the Academia Nacional de Ciencias. However, private individuals must provide their date and place of birth and identity card number when registering. Companies must at least provide their VAT number, although an extract from the commercial register is often required. Until March 2008, only domains with this ending could be registered under special second-level domains. This restriction was lifted in March 2008. However, existing domain address ranges have been retained and continue to exist in parallel to the top-level domain, such as the second-level domains for academic institutions, for commercial companies, for educational institutions, for registered credit institutions, for the government of the country and for non-profit organisations and hospitals.
