Meaning and history

The domain ending .eu is the country-specific top-level domain for the European Union.

For companies, firms, associations and organisations that want to give their offers a European face, the domain extension .eu is the first choice. A European domain is also ideal for private websites, blogs and information platforms located within the EU or with European topics.

The domain extension can also be recommended to website operators as a perfect alternative to a country code top-level domain, for example .de. Online shops with a target group within the EU also benefit from using this domain extension. This brings them closer to their customers and/or to Europe.

The registration of a domain ending in .eu in combination with the trademark strengthens the intellectual property rights of the contents of the website. By opting for this domain ending, website operators can prevent third parties from registering a domain with their trademark. The registration of this domain ending is advantageous for any serious internet presence that operates transnationally.

This domain extension was introduced on 28. 04.2005. It can be registered by all companies and private individuals with a location or residence within the EU. The allocation of this domain is fully automated within a few minutes. Of course it can also be used for forwarding to other websites.

For companies and private individuals from Liechtenstein, Iceland and Norway, registration is possible since 08.01.2014. For companies, associations, organisations and private individuals from Switzerland, the possibility of registration has not yet been put into practice.

The support of special characters, mostly from Germany, in the domain name was put into practice in December 2009. The official administration and registry EURid, located in Belgium, works closely with EUIPO to provide data protection information.

As a matter of principle, only the e-mail address is published by private persons as contact information. For legal entities (companies, organisations, etc.), the complete data set is published on the website using Whois-Lookup (protocol), consisting of e-mail address, fax number, telephone number, postal address, language and name.

Holders of a domain ending in .eu also have the option of setting up an alert. As soon as a domain name is requested that is identical to the UM entered by the user, the domain holder will receive a notification. The alarm can be set up in the menu item Configuration and of course deactivated again.

Special features of the domain extension

If you want to order .eu domains, you must have a residence or company headquarters within the countries of the European Economic Area (EEA). The EEA also includes Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, so customers residing in Switzerland would not meet the requirement. In order to be able to order .eu domains in this case, web hosting providers offer a trustee service, in which case the registration is carried out by our trustee, who acts as the holder. Of course you will receive the complete rights of use for the domain and can register your desired name immediately!
