The .eus domain is a top-level domain with a non-profit purpose. The domain extension was founded on April 2, 2008 and since then the generic domain is managed by the PuntuEus Foundation.
The aim of the .eus domain extension is to promote the Basque language and culture. The domain aims to strengthen the cohesion and community between those who can identify with the Basque language. The sense of community among the Basques should thus be expanded and attention drawn to the culture.
The Basque language (Euskara) is mostly spoken in the so-called Basque Country. The language is the only isolated language in Europe, which means that the language has no similarities or crossings with other languages. The Basque Country is located in the north of Spain and in the southwest of France. In this area, about 700,000 Spaniards speak Basque and about 50,000 French people speak the language. The number of speakers outside this area is also not insignificant, as nearly half a million other speakers of the Basque language are spread throughout the world.
In order to be able to register such a domain extension, no residence and no stay in Spain or France is necessary. Moreover, you do not have to be a citizen of one of these countries to be able to register the domain. Nevertheless, the registration is not completely unrestricted. The domain must meet at least one of three requirements in order to be registered. The three requirements are as follows:
- The contents of the website are in Basque
- The content of the website is related to the Basque language
- The content speaks broadly about Basque culture
Although the domain has been around since 2008, ICANN did not approve the domain extension until June 10 in 2013. Prior to that, the European Union's .eu domain extension was often used as a fallback address, albeit unofficially. Since the approval of the domain extension, a number of websites have registered with de domain extension .eus. At the beginning of 2020, PuntuEus was able to report more than 10,000 domains with the extension .eus.
