.gg is the country-specific top-level domain (ccTLD) of the island of Guernsey. This domain has existed since August 7, 1996. The top-level domain is administered by the Island Network, which is located on the island in the English Channel and also administers the country-specific top-level domain of Jersey (.je) of the neighbouring island.
Guernsey is the second largest British island in the English Channel between England and France. As of mid-2018, more than 62,000 people live on the popular tourist island. The capital of the island is called St. Peter Port.
The .gg domain is released to applicants by the Iceland Network through an automated system. Nevertheless, the registration of the address can take up to three working days. Anyone can order a .gg domain from the Island Network, but the applicant does not have to live on the island itself, but can also live on the other side of the world.
The domain has three more subdomains, which can still be registered at the Island Network:
.co for commercial and personal domains
.net for Internet service providers and commercial enterprises
.org for charitable organizations (free of charge)
The domain extension .gg is especially popular for video games and e-sports websites. "GG" often means "Good Game" in computer games as "good game". This expression is often used at the end of a game in a multiplayer round to show respect for the opposing players. Therefore, many websites related to computer games also use this domain. A well-known example is the app "Discord". This app is a messanger, especially for video games and e-sports. The website for example uses the domain .gg. Other examples with this domain are:
LeagueOfLegends
DuckDuckGo as a forwarding to duckduckgo.com
Champion
Navi
and astralis.
On most trading platforms on the Internet, however, the domain plays almost no role at all, until now, as it is an "average domain", without much special features. It was only through a name dispute at the end of 2012 that the .gg domain gained some attention when the two companies TLD Registrar Services and TLD Registry Services fought over a name with the domain.
