The domain extension .gs is the country-specific top-level domain of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, a British overseas territory in the South Atlantic Ocean, approximately 3,600 kilometres from the South Pole. The islands are also located 1,400 kilometers east of the Falkland Islands. Several islands belong to South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
Allocation guidelines of the domain extension
The domain ending was launched on 31 July 1997 and assigned to the then government of the island state. It is operated by Atlantis North Limited. No private person or company can be registered under .gs no domain address. Who is not active in the government of the country, has no access to the WWW. In total the island state has only about 30 inhabitants, although they are not even permanent residents. Only two seconded government officials live on the island of South Georgia with their spouses. The remaining members of the overseas government are in Stanley on the Falkland Islands. In the summer, four museum employees are added to the staff, who keep the gates of the South Georgia Museum open for tourists. The tourists are cruise ship passengers or yacht tourists. The museum covers topics from the discovery of the island, the once legendary seal hunt and the 1982 Falkland War, and has been run by the South Georgia Heritage Trust since 2006. In addition, some 25 employees of the British Antarctic Survey still live in the station at King Edward Point and in the station on Bird Island. Those who want to have a .gs domain as a private person or a company can register it through a trustee.
Use and meaning
There are hardly any domain addresses under the domain extension .gs in this island state. The few domain addresses are all registered to the government of this island state. It is possible that a domain address can be registered under .gs. However, this has more or less only a symbolic character. For this reason, there is no international interest in the domain ending .gs.
