The term "Top-Level-Domains (TLD)" corresponds to what is called domain extension in everyday life. In this respect, the letters to the right of the last dot of the domain are to be considered. A distinction is made in TLDs between generic (gTLD for short) and country-specific (ccTLD, where "cc" stands for "country-code") domains. By registering a TLD in the Domain Name System (DNS), websites can be accessed via the domain.
H2 The meaning of the .jp TLD
.jp is the country-specific top-level domain of the state of Japan. The abbreviation "jp" refers to the term Japan. ccTLDs are characterized by the use of only two letters.
H2 Since when does the Japanese TLD exist?
The Japan Network Information Center (JPNIC) registered the .jp top-level domain on August 5, 1986 and is administered by the accredited registrar Japan Registry Services. The registry where the registrations are administered is located in the Japanese city of Chiyoda.
H2 What is the purpose of the country-specific TLD?
In principle, a .jp TLD can be registered with JP Registry Services if the individual or company has a permanent postal address in Japan. Without a permanent postal address, domains can alternatively be registered through the registration of a trustee address. Such a trustee address is provided by the registrar GMO JP Registration Services. The expiration date of a Japanese domain is set to 17 days before the end of the month in which the domain was registered 12 months earlier. Usually, one year of registration is allowed, provided that no domain renewal is made.
H2 Why is the choice of the .jp TLD appropriate for website registration?
Japanese individuals and companies can choose from a variety of TLDs - such as .com - but the domestic TLD is usually most intuitive when entering a web address. This allows website operators to minimize the risk of users entering the wrong domain in the address bar.
Another aspect is that Japanese TLDs can only be registered by private or legal persons who have a permanent postal address in Japan. Especially companies can signal their legal commercial activity with a Japanese TLD.
H2 Popular second-level domains
To make it easier for users to classify a domain thematically, the following second-level domains are frequently used in Japan:
.ac.TLD = universities
.ad.TLD = members of the JPNIC
.co.TLD= Company
.ed.TLD = kindergartens and schools
.go.TLD = Government
.gr.TLD = groups of persons or companies
.lg.TLD = local governments
.or.TLD = legal entities
H2 Further information about the .jp-TLD
In September 2017, more than 1.4 million Japanese top-level domains were registered. According to a 2009 report by McAfee, the Japanese TLD is one of the most secure country-code TLDs in the world.
Due to the strict guidelines of the registry you can only order .jp domains through a trustee service.
