The domain extension .lu is the country-specific top-level domain of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It was launched on 30 June 1988 and is administered by the Réseau Téléinformatique de l'Education Nationale et de la Recherche foundation. Since spring 2010 it is possible to support the allocation of internationalized domain names to the ending .lu.
Award criteria
Between 30 June 1988 and the end of January 2010, the individual or company wishing to register a .lu domain had to prove that they were domiciled or had their registered office in Luxembourg. Since February 2010, this hurdle of registration has fallen. This means that any private person in the world and any company with a residence or registered office outside of Luxembourg can now apply for a domain address with this domain extension. This means that there are no more restrictions since then.
Meaning
The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is of great importance, particularly in Europe, as the seat of numerous European Union authorities, as an international administrative centre and, because of the favourable tax environment, also in the service sector, especially the banking and insurance sector, also because of its proximity to France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. Most financial service providers based in Luxembourg do not offer their services in Luxembourg or offer them only to a very limited extent in Luxembourg and still have a .lu domain. The 500,000 or so inhabitants of Luxembourg have also registered a .lu domain. There you can find content in three different languages, namely those which are also officially official languages in the Grand Duchy, namely Luxembourgish (similar to Moselle Franconian German), German and French. A large part of the population speaks German.
German was also the capital with which heavy industry, which flourished into the 1970s, dominated Luxembourg's economy in the middle of the 19th century and on whose foundation Luxembourg's prosperity is partly based to this day, based on the rich ore deposits in the southwest of the Grand Duchy. Companies in the iron and steel industry did not survive the structural change in the country that began in the 1970s. However, websites of these companies with the domain extension .lu can still be visited today. The tourism industry has a rather disorderly interest in a domain address with the extension .lu.
