.ly is the country-specific top-level domain of the North African state Libya. The domain is administered by the General Post and Telecommunication Company Al Zawia. The top-level domain was introduced to the country by the General Post and Telecommunication Company Al Zawia on 23 April 1997.
Libya is a republican state in northern Africa. The country has more than 6.8 million inhabitants. However, Libya is technically far behind other countries. For example, only slightly more than 20 percent of the 6.8 million inhabitants have functional Internet access.
Officially, any natural person or legal entity may apply for a domain extension with .ly from the General Post and Telecommunication Company. There are no particular restrictions on the automated allocation of the domain. No residence or stay in the state is necessary to apply for a domain. However, there have been reports in the past that domains with a pornographic reference have been deleted without warning. A successful registration usually takes no longer than three working days.
The domain ending .ly achieves continuously high trade prices on most trade sites, because the ending "ly" is used to form adjectives in the English language, for example "lovely". Since many applicants prefer such a domain, they choose to use it. Thus the domain achieves high trade prices with up to 75 Doller in one year.
A well-known example is the website "musical.ly". The app is the predecessor to the social media app "TikTok", which is used worldwide. It is also through this domain that the Libyan top-level domain achieved greater worldwide attention on the Internet. Nevertheless, only about 15,000 domains ending in .ly have been registered worldwide in 2017, partly due to the relatively high prices that have to be paid for the domain.
The top-level domain offers additional domains on the second level. These can be registered with the General Post and Telecommunication Company. The subdomains used are as follows:
