The domain extension .mn is the country-specific top-level domain of Mongolia, a landlocked country in the eastern part of Central Asia, located between Russia in the north and China in the south. The territory of Mongolia comprises the largest part of the Mongolian Plateau. The capital of Mongolia is Ulan Bator (or t Ulaanbaatar). This is where 40 percent of Mongolia's approximately 3.1 million inhabitants live. Mongolia is a multiracial state. The majority of the inhabitants are Mongols. The minorities in the country are Turkic peoples, like the Tuvinians and the Kazakhs. Russians and Han Chinese also live in Mongolia.

Allocation guidelines of the domain extension

The domain extension .mn was launched on 2 March 1995 and is administratively managed by Datacom Co Ltd, a company with its registered office in the Mongolian capital. For the registration of a domain name under .mn no residence by a private person or company headquarters or a branch of a company in Mongolia is required. Even if an administrative contact is appointed, this person does not have to be domiciled in Mongolia. However, in order to register a domain address ending in .mn, the applicant must be at least 18 years old.

Use and meaning

The economy in Mongolia is modest. Around 40 percent of the population lives below the poverty line. The country went through difficult times of economic reform, in which state enterprises were transformed into private enterprises. Today, the private sector accounts for 80 percent. Mongolia is characterised by a disparity between urban and rural areas. This is also reflected in access to the WWW. More inhabitants in the cities, especially those living in the country's capital, have access to the WWW. The rural population is almost completely excluded. Some companies in Mongolia also maintain economic relations with foreign companies and therefore also use a domain address ending in .mn. However, the importance of the domain ending is very low - both nationally and internationally.
