The domain extension .mx is the country-specific top-level domain from Mexico. This domain extension was launched on February 1, 1989 and is assigned and administrated by the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey.

Award guidelines

Until 1996 the use of a .mx domain was exclusively reserved for the government of Mexico and educational institutions in Mexico. Second level domains were later implemented for universities and other organizations. But also companies and private individuals were attracted to this level, whereby this was already a big step towards liberalisation, as it was not possible for companies and private individuals with a company headquarters or residence to register an .mx domain. In autumn 2009 the allocation was liberalised once again, which has made it possible to register domains directly under .mx since then. In the course of this liberalization it is now also possible to register a .mx domain name if you are a private person not domiciled in Mexico. The same applies to companies that do not have a registered office or branch in Mexico. For many people, the liberalization of this domain extension was also a sign that the Central American country itself is opening up further, whereby many international companies had already invested in Mexico for decades. The proportion of companies from the automotive manufacturing sector and the automotive parts supply industry is very high.

Use and meaning

Mexico is considered to be a rather poor country, as its economic performance depends mainly on exports of large machinery. Due to the climate, however, hardly anything thrives in Mexico, so that many food and other daily necessities have to be imported into Mexico. The population of the country is considered to be very poor, which is why many consider emigrating to the USA or other countries. Most of the approximately 128 million inhabitants of Mexico have no direct access to the WWW. For this reason there are still only a few private persons who have registered a .mx domain address. For many international companies that trade with companies in Mexico, it is quite lucrative to own a website with this domain extension.
