register cheaply in the webhosting price comparison
The domain extension .ng is the country-specific top-level domain from Nigeria. It was launched on 15 March 1995 and is administered by the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA) in Victoria Island, after the Yaba College of Technology took over responsibility for the domain extension after its launch. Initially, the technical operation was handled by the Instituto per le Applicazioni Telematiche in Italy. Only in 2004 was responsibility transferred to the National Information Technical Development Agency. However, there was still a transitional period of five years, so that the NIRA was only fully responsible for the domain extension from 2009. Since March 2009 domains with .ng can be registered automatically. However, one hurdle to the reintroduction was the high cost of this second-level domain. Only few companies could afford these costs at all. The costs did not fall until 2011, when .ng was also advertised in public.
Use
To register a domain ending in .ng, the company does not need to have a registered office or branch in Nigeria. A private person does not have to be a resident of Nigeria. This means that any natural or legal person worldwide can register a .ng domain. This is especially useful for Nigerians who no longer live in their home country and can demonstrate their connection to their home country very well in this way. In Nigeria itself, very few people have direct access to the WWW and therefore little interest in a domain ending in .ng.
Meaning
Due to this circumstance and because of the comparatively high costs for the registration of a domain with .ng, this domain extension has hardly any meaning in Nigeria. Most companies and individuals in Nigeria use internationally accessible registrations for their websites. Apart from the costs, the relative unpopularity also has something to do with the slow registration process. Up to seven days waiting time must be accepted for a registration.
