Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 graphics card

The ideal upgrade for PC gamers

With the RTX 30 series, NVIDIA offers tremendous performance improvements with RTX 20 cards based on Turing (named after the British mathematician Alan Turing). The RTX 3070 sets a new standard for 4K gaming.

The RTX 3070 is not only positioned as a card for 1400p games. The performance offered makes it a great option for 4K games, even at high settings.

The RTX 3090 and 3080 are based on GA102 silicon, but the RTX 3070 has a GA104 chipset that delivers 17.4 billion transistors, almost twice as many as the RTX 2070.

The graphics card also offers HDMI 2.1 and PCIe 4.0 connectivity and is based on a Samsung 8nm node. This leads to significant gains in energy efficiency.

The RTX 3070 Founders Edition hardware includes 5,888 CUDA cores, 46 RT cores and 184 texture units with a base clock of 1.5 GHz and a boost of 1.7 GHz.

It is understandable for NVIDIA to retain the GDDR6 standard for the RTX 3070 instead of GDDR6X or HBM2 memory, and while the effective Bandwidth is the same as that of the previous generation, the RTX 3070 offers enormous upgrades in other areas.

The RTX 3070 offers the same HDMI 2.1 connectivity as the 3080 and 3090, and the card is also based on PCIe 4.0.
You get three DisplayPort 1.4a connectors, hardware decoding for the new AV1 codec and the new 12-pin power connector.

The RTX 3070 has a TDP ("Thermal Design Power") of 220 W or 45 W more than the RTX 2070, so NVIDIA uses the 12-pin power connector as standard.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 amp architecture

Thanks to its ampere architecture, NVIDIA offers significant advantages over Turing-based RTX 20 cards.

NVIDIA has made many changes to achieve these benefits, including revising the streaming multiprocessor (SM), updating the RT cores, and optimizing the tensor cores.

The Ampere Streaming Multiprocessor is the key to improved performance with RTX 3070.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 design and features

NVIDIA has not limited itself to architecture changes. The design of the Founders Edition cards has also been revised. The RTX 3080 introduced an innovative push-pull cooling system, and although the RTX 3070 has a traditional layout, it still stands out.

If aesthetics are important to you, the RTX 3070 Founders Edition is the right choice for you.

The RTX 3070 is a card with two slots, where the two fans draw air from the bottom of the housing.

The card is more compact than the RTX 3080, but retains the same design language.
The colour scheme is predominantly black with a matt grey finish for the outer layer.

The metal backplate takes up most of the back of the card. On the right side is a recess for the cooling system, through which the secondary fan can vent air through the fins. On the right side is the GeForce RTX logo. Unlike the RTX 3080, the logo doesn't light up.

According to NVIDIA, the new design is optimized for better cooling, and this is indeed the case in practice.

The RTX 3070 fans do not turn on when the GPU is under minimal load, and even when running, they are quieter than the RTX 20 series fans.

The RTX 3070 is not lacking in innovative technology.
NVIDIA's Reflex is a new feature first available on RTX 30 cards.
It offers much better latency, especially for FPS titles. NVIDIA was able to make several optimizations to the render queue to reduce system latency.

Reflex technology works with G-Sync to provide update rates of 360 Hz and above.

Another exciting innovation is RTX IO, where NVIDIA leverages the DirectStorage API from Microsoft is used to shorten the loading times.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Performance

The RTX 3070 is the ideal middle ground in the NVIDIA startup series.
Most gamers currently using the GTX 10 series or older will upgrade to the RTX 3070 for optimized performance.

The RTX 3070 graphics card also offers HDMI 2.1, making it comparable with Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.
HDMI 2.1 enables 4K at up to 240 Hz and 8K at 120 Hz.

The RTX 3070 is ideal for 1440p games, but 4K games are also excellently processed.

Another area where NVIDIA is announcing significant gains is Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS).
This technology scales games essentially while maintaining visual quality. The result is that you get significantly better frame rates for the same visual fidelity.

Most AAA games today include DLSS. This technology makes a dramatic difference, especially when playing 4K games with the RTX 3070.

... you are looking for a graphics card with the best price-performance ratio

The RTX 3070 is leading in terms of value. The card offers massive gains over the RTX 2070 and 2080 at 1440p and 4K. If you are interested in getting the best performance for your money, this is the card for you.

... you want a GPU that can handle 4K games comfortably

The hardware supplied with the RTX 3070 is ideal for next-generation games, and the card is designed for a service life of several years.

... you would like to upgrade from the GTX 10 or RTX 20 series carry out

The RTX 3070 offers a twofold performance increase over the RTX 2070 with resolutions of 1440p and 4K.
If you are using an RTX 2070, 2080 or older GTX 10 series card, the RTX 3070 is the ideal upgrade for your graphics card.
