The domain extension .pe is the country-specific top-level domain from Peru, a country in South America. It was launched on November 25, 1991 and is administrated and maintained by Red Cientifica Peruana, which has its headquarters in Lima, the capital of Peru.
Award guidelines
You can register a .pe domain name if you are an individual or a company, regardless of where your residence, main office or branch is located. This means that a private person and a company do not have to be resident in Peru to register such a domain. Until the end of October 2007, only third-level domains could be registered. Only from the beginning of November 2007 did the registry relax these strict registration guidelines. Since then it is also possible that the owner of a .pe domain can change without any problems. Furthermore, since then it has also been possible to use certain previously blocked terms for the domain name.
Use and meaning
In the South American country, which the world considers to be an emerging market, most of the 31 million or so do not have access to the WWW. The registration of domains ending in .pe is therefore extremely rare for private individuals living in Peru. And also the importance of the .pe domain extension for companies with their headquarters in the country is rather low. At the time of the liberalisation of the registry guidelines in 2007 only about 17,000 domains with the ending .pe were registered. This top-level domain is therefore rather insignificant by international comparison.
After liberalisation, however, corporations showed great interest, as the abbreviation PE stands not only for Peru but also for private equity. There are therefore some companies, mainly internationally active, which use their corporate form as a domain extension and thus show their business partners immediately what kind of corporation they are. However, confusion cannot be ruled out here, because many may think that this company has a branch or even its headquarters in Peru.
