The domain extension .pm is the country-specific top-level domain from Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon. It is a French overseas territory, more precisely a small group of islands east of the Canadian coast, about 25 kilometres south of the coast of Newfoundland. The archipelago was once part of the French colony New France and has about 6000 inhabitants. The population there speaks French and lives from tourism and fishing.
Issuing guidelines for domain extensions
The awarding guidelines for .pm are very liberal. At least since December 2011. Since then, it has been possible for any individual or company, regardless of their domicile, registered office or branch in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, to register a domain under .pm if their domicile, registered office or branch is located in the European Union, Iceland, Switzerland, Liechtenstein or Norway. Individuals with a residence in France must indicate their birthday and place of birth as well as their postal code.
Use and meaning
Only a few of the approximately 6000 inhabitants of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon have direct access to the WWW. This also has something to do with the hardly developed infrastructure. The island state has been in an economic crisis since the early 1990s. The economic centre of the island state is the capital Saint Pierre, where also most of the inhabitants of the island state live. There are only a few companies that make investments in the archipelago. The country's imports exceed its exports, as the harsh climate of the region where the archipelago is located hardly allows for agriculture. The island state is mainly dependent on the mother country France. There are hardly any domain addresses with the ending .pm. Tourism companies have only limited interest in setting up a domain address under .pm. Tourism on the islands is currently under construction. Even though the islands pay with the Euro, only few tourists are interested in visiting the islands every year. The state airline operates between the main island and Canada, as do the ferries.
.pm domains can be registered for any (legal) purpose by companies and private individuals who have their residence or company headquarters in an EU member state, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway.
