The domain extension .ro is the country-specific top-level domain of Romania and was launched on 26 February 1993. It is administered by the National Institute for R&D in Informatics with headquarters in Bucharest, the capital of Romania.
The country, which is geographically located in the transition zone between Central, Southern and Eastern Europe, gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1877 and was originally created in its recent history by the unification of the principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. The country has borders with Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Ukraine and Moldova. Politically and economically, Romania was already drawing closer to Western Europe in 1989 and has been a member of the European Union since 2007 and of NATO since 2004.
Registration open to everyone
Since 1995 it has been possible to register a .ro website worldwide. It can be a natural person or a legal entity. A residence or a branch office in Romania is not necessary. However, the registry office requires an identity card number or proof of a favourable entry in the commercial register. When choosing a domain name, the Romanian diacritical marks a, â, î, s and t can also be used. Due to these loose allocation rules it was also possible in 2005 to promote an application of the .ro domain ending for regional companies in the city and county of Rosenheim, whose car registration number is RO.
A registration of the .ro domain is possible on the second and third level. However, there are certain second-level domains that are reserved for certain target groups. These target groups include companies, the arts and culture and registered trademarks.
