The domain extension .ua stands for the country-specific top-level domain (ccTLD) of Ukraine.
The .ua extension is managed by the company Hostmaster LDt, which is based in Kiev. The TLD was introduced on 1 December 1992.
The Ukraine is an Eastern European state and its largest metropolis is the state capital Kiev. The cities of Dnipro, Odessa, Kharkiv and Donetsk are also urban centres.
Ukraine is a former member of the Soviet Union and has been an independent state since its collapse in 1991.
Since February 2014 there has been an armed conflict in parts of eastern Ukraine, which was triggered by the Euromaidan protests and continues to this day.
As a result, the government of Ukraine no longer has any control in some parts of southern eastern Ukraine and Crimea.
The TLD .ua is the direct successor of the domain ending .su, which was valid for the Soviet Union.
The ending .su still exists today, but like some other ccTLDs it is to be deleted.
In the course of this deletion, users in the Ukraine with the ending .su can make use of a special right of exchange.
Since November 2013 the cyrillic variant .??? adds the ending .ua, so that international domain names can now be fully supported.
The allocation is restricted. Only companies and private persons who own a trademark valid in Ukraine can order a domain extension.
As of May 2017, 557,838 domains have been registered, and the trend is rising.
Approximately 10.78 % of all .ua domains were served over a secure HTTPS protocol until March 2017, with the most popular SSL certificate being Let's Encrypt Authority X3. The most popular web server is Nginx, which serves 68.97% of the domains, followed by Apache, which reaches 17.75%.
In order to prevent cybersquatting, the registration of second-level domains is limited to the owners of registered trademarks who may wish to apply for a domain name similar to that of the trademark in question.
However, it is possible to register on the third level under certain circumstances.
Examples of this would be the third-level domain .com.ua, which can be registered without restriction by all natural persons or companies worldwide, or .edu.ua, which is available free of charge to educational institutions.
Only the holder of a valid trademark in Ukraine can order .ua domains .the domain name must correspond to the trademark name.after the application we ask you to send us the trademark certificate which serves as proof at the registry.besides the registration of your desired name directly under .ua you can also choose the domain extension .com.ua, which is especially interesting for the search engine optimization. Domains ending in .com.ua can be registered by anyone for any (legal) purpose.
