The domain extension .co is the country-specific top-level domain from Colombia, which has been in existence since December 24, 1991.
The Republic of Colombia is located in northern South America, where it is the second largest country in terms of population. The economic and cultural center of the country is the capital Bogotá and the country's name is derived from the famous discoverer Christopher Columbus.
First the domain was taken over by the Universidad de los Andes. The special thing about the domain ending .co is the similarity to the ending .com. The university therefore wanted to market the domain in 2001, because it represents a second-level domain for commercial companies in many country-specific top-level domains.
Since there are only a few short domains available with the ending .com, .co is particularly attractive. The association of words such as content, community, corporation and connection is also crucial.
The planned marketing of the domain was rejected by the Colombian government. Since the university was no longer able to administer the domain, the .CO Internet SAS was founded after eight years. This company took over the task.
Before the new registry was taken over, the addresses could only be registered at the third level and only by Colombian citizens or companies.
After the registry had changed, the previous addresses on the third level remained for the time being, but the registration of every person on the second level was allowed.
Examples of second-level domains that exist are: .com.co for commercial companies or .org.co for non-profit organizations.
On the occasion of its second birthday, the registry had published several detailed statistics on the distribution of the domain. Among other things, they show that only two percent of the registrations come from Germany, while 54 percent of the holders are based in the USA.
July 20, 2015 was the fifth birthday of .co. At that time the domain went online with the goal of becoming a TLD for start-ups. Even today, it is still one of the most popular TLDs for rising young entrepreneurs.
No exact numbers are known, but a blog post from late 2013 shows that the TLD has so far allocated more than 1.5 million addresses.
