The domain extension .dj is the country-specific top-level domain of Djibouti, an East African country located at the strait Bab al-Mandab with borders to Eritrea in the north, Ethiopia in the west and south and Somalia in the southeast. To the east, Djibouti borders the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea. On the other side of the Red Sea lies Yemen. The country was granted independence by France in 1977 and has an estimated 860,000 inhabitants. Because of its location on the Suez Canal, the country is strategically important. The USA, Germany and France maintain military bases here. Djibouti has one of the largest container terminals in the region and has always served travellers as a stopover on their way from Africa to South East Asia.

The domain extension .dj was launched on 22 May 1996 and is administered by Djibouti Telecom. There is no special restriction for the registration of a second-level domain address for .dj. This means that every private person and every company can register a .dj domain address, no matter where they live or have their registered office. Prohibited are domain addresses that violate the general moral concepts of the country. This includes especially pornography.

Use and meaning

The meaning of the domain extension .dj is quite small. This is because there are only a few companies operating internationally in this north-east African country, north of the Horn of Africa. Most of the approximately 860,000 people in Djibouti do not have access to the WWW and are therefore not interested in registering their own domain address under the .dj ending. The economy of Djibouti is based in particular on the service sector and payments from France for the French military units stationed in the country. The transit trade with Ethiopia is very important for the country. The main commodity traded is salt, which is extracted from the country's numerous salt lakes. Tourism in the country is also just beginning. However, there are already good approaches for diving and fishing tourism.
