The domain extension .do is the country-specific top-level domain of the Dominican Republic, an island state in the Caribbean which is located in the east of the island Hispaniola. The western part of the island is occupied by the island state Haiti. About 10 million people live in this island state, whose main source of income is tourism. The export goods, which are mainly shipped to the USA, include leather goods, cigars and textiles. Low wages and the current political stability make the island state an attractive production location. However, the domestic infrastructure is only poorly developed.
Allocation guidelines of the domain extension
The domain extension .do was launched on 25 August 1991 and is administered by the Pontifical Catholic University "Mater et Magistra" with its seat in the capital of the island state, Santo Domingo. Initially, domains could only be registered at the third level. Since October 2009, second-level domains are also possible. A domain address ending in .do can be registered by individuals and companies all over the world. This means that anybody can apply for a domain address without having a residence or company headquarters or a branch in the island state. However, the registry requires that the identity card number or the commercial register number and the VAT number be provided.
Use and meaning
Due to the poorly developed infrastructure in the Dominican Republic, only few inhabitants of the Caribbean state have access to the WWW. Also many companies do not exist on the island. The companies that invest in the infrastructure or in other areas from abroad have international domain extensions for their websites. It is unnecessary to program a separate website with content in another language especially for the Dominican Republic, because in this island state French is spoken in addition to the official language Spanish. In the northeast of the island there is even an English-speaking minority living in the city of Samaná.
The importance of the domain ending .do is therefore to be considered as very low and there are only a few domain names registered for this ending.
.do domains can be ordered by private individuals and companies. The registry requires the following data during registration: for companies, the commercial register number and VAT number. You can store these in your portfolio in the "My data" section. For private individuals, the identity card number. In addition to registering your desired name under the ending .do, you can also choose between the endings .com.do, .net.do, .org.do. These are particularly interesting for search engine optimization.
