Meaning and history

The domain extension .li is the country-specific top-level domain for the Principality of Liechtenstein, a small neighbouring country of Switzerland and Austria. The landlocked country in the Alpine region has about 38,000 inhabitants and has a high economic power. Numerous industrial companies are based in Liechtenstein and there is a large financial sector. Recreational, hiking and ski tourism also play a very important role as a source of income.

Allocation guidelines of the domain extension

The domain extension .li was launched on 26 February 1993 and is administered by the University of Liechtenstein. The technical requirements and support are the responsibility of the Swiss company SWITCH, which also acted as the domain registrar until 14 February 2013. Since then, its subsidiary switchplus has been responsible for this area. Registrations for domains with .li are carried out directly at the second level.

A registration of a domain ending in .li is possible for all private users and all companies, regardless of whether they have a residence, company headquarters or branch office in Liechtenstein.

Use

The infrastructure in the Principality of Liechtenstein is very well developed. This means that all of the approximately 38,000 inhabitants of the Principality, which stretches along the right bank of the Rhine in the Alps and is surrounded by the Swiss cantons of St. Gallen and Graubünden and the Austrian province of Vorarlberg, have direct access to the WWW if they so desire. There are also a number of private individuals resident in Liechtenstein and also many companies that have registered a domain ending in .li. In February 2016, there were approximately 63,000 registered .li domains.

Meaning

The importance of the domain ending .li in the registration of a domain name is considered very important for the inhabitants of Liechtenstein. This is because most of the inhabitants of the Principality are proud of their country, their sovereign and the economic performance of one of the smallest states in the world. Numerous companies based in Liechtenstein also use such a domain with this domain ending to be present on the WWW and to be easily found on the WWW by consumers in Liechtenstein and by their customers outside the country.
