The domain extension .mt is the country-specific top-level domain of the island Malta. The extension was launched on December 2, 1992 and is technically administered by Network Information Centre Malta (NIC Malta for short).
Award guidelines
The NIC Malta only assigns this domain extension for domain addresses to companies that have a direct connection to Malta and use this connection for business purposes. Furthermore, non-profit organisations can register a .mt domain. However, companies with a direct connection to Malta are also companies that do not have a branch office on the island. This is especially true for tourism companies or the landlords of holiday homes or apartments on the very popular tourist island Malta. Furthermore, the NIC Malta requires the indication of the VAT identification number. International trademarks also have access to a website with a .mt domain extension.
If a company or trademark applies for a domain address with this domain extension, a copy of the corresponding certificate for the registration of the trademark is also required. The trademark must be registered under the name under which it is offered in Malta. The requested domain address must contain or correspond to the company name in the case of trademark owners, foundations and companies. NIC Malta also requires companies to provide their VAT identification number. The NIC Malta reserves the right to delete incorrectly registered .mt domain addresses without warning.
These restrictive allocation guidelines have so far prevented this top-level domain from being widely used internationally. Thus, in June 2004, just over 2,200 domain addresses were registered with this domain ending.
Meaning
Internationally and nationally, the .mt domain extension is of rather little significance, especially since it is not intended to be used by private individuals. Restaurants and clubs on Malta are among the at least some companies that advertise locally a little bit on their website with the extension .mt. Most of the inhabitants of Malta live from tourism themselves.
.mt and com.mt-domains can only be ordered by companies with a sales tax number. If a .com.mt-domain is registered, the domain name must correspond to the company or brand name. If the domain name corresponds to your brand name valid in Malta, a copy of the trademark certificate is required.
