The domain extension .pk is the country code Top-Level-Domain (ccTLD) from the country Pakistan. The country-specific domain was already introduced on June 3 in the summer of 1992. The domain is administered by the organization Pakistan Network Information Center (short: PKNIC). The non-profit organization PKNIC was founded by the Pakistani government especially for this domain extension in the summer of 1992.
Pakistan (or Islamic Republic of Pakistan) is a state in South East Asia. The country borders on China and India, among others. The Islamic Republic of Pakistan has more than 215 million inhabitants (as of 2019). The country is one of the most underdeveloped countries in Asia. However, the number of inhabitants and the prosperity of the middle class in the country is growing more and more. Technically, the country continues to lag behind the European average. In 2016, for example, only about 17 percent of the population used the World Wide Web, despite great efforts. But rising prosperity is likely to lead to more activity in the technical infrastructure in the next few years, so that more inhabitants can use the Internet. But it will probably take quite a while.
The registration of the domain .pk is not restricted. To obtain a domain, no residence or stay in the Islamic country is required.
