There was a technical defect in a computer centre in the Gütersloh area which led to a complete power failure.
Due to the outage, numerous well-known websites such as spiegel Online and Focus were no longer accessible and in parts of West Germany there were also disruptions to the Telephony.
Strangely enough, in most cases the UPS system itself is the cause of a power failure in Data Center. This may have been the reason for this, because normally all systems are designed with multiple redundancy and secured by additional (diesel) emergency power generators.
It is therefore always recommended to operate a backup circuit without UPS.
Despite terms like Cloud and high availability, no system is 100% achievable. Even though many providers of data center offers guarantee 100% availability. In the terms and conditions, there is then a small credit in relation to the monthly base price if this 100% is not reached.
