The domain extension .si is the country-specific top-level domain (ccTDL) from Slovenia.
It is managed by the Academic and Research Network of Slovenia, ARNES for short, and was introduced on 1 April 1992.
In the beginning, the ending belonged to the restricted top-level domains, which means that only natural persons with a branch in Slovenia, companies based there or international organisations of which Slovenia is a member could register a domain.
The domain registry and domain registrar was the registry ARNES.
Slovenia is a country in Central Europe. The largest city of the country is also the centrally located capital Ljubljana. Slovenia joined the EU and NATO in 2004 and the euro zone in 2007.
After the end of the Second World War, Slovenia was part of Yugoslavia. After the 10-day war and the declaration of independence on 25 June 1991, it became an independent nation state. On 22 May 1992 Slovenia finally became an independent member of the UNO.
Today it is the most prosperous country of the former socialist Yugoslavia.
The restrictions on the TLD were largely lifted after Slovenia's accession to the EU, and the new directives came into force in April 2005.
Now private individuals and companies from abroad are also permitted to use it.
The registration of domains is now only possible through accredited webhosters, since the ARNES registry has been limited to the activities of a Network Information Center.
A further change in the award criteria was made in 2010: The TLD now supports the use of non-alphanumeric characters from the following languages: Slovenian, Croatian, Hungarian, Italian and German.
Thus, internationalized domain names with .si are possible, but not all registrars support them.
Popular for the TLD are domain hacks, since the syllable "si" in Slovenian is the second person singular of a verb. There have been many domains created with such hacks, one of the most famous and popular is zadovoljna.si, which translated means "you are happy" (female).
The word "Si" means "yes" translated from Spanish, so some Spanish websites have used the TLD for messages. The best known example is the Mexican political party MORENA, whose website can be found under the domain morena.si.
The large corporation Pepsi also uses the TLD as URL abbreviation pep.si.
