The domain extension .vg is the country-specific top-level domain of the British Virgin Islands, a British overseas territory in the Caribbean. The British Virgin Islands comprise 60 islands and reefs, 16 of which are inhabited. The archipelago is located about 100 kilometers east off the coast of Puerto Rico. The economy of the country is closely linked to the American Virgin Islands.

The .vg domain extension was launched on 20 February 1997. It is administered by Pinebrook Developments, and is operated by a subsidiary of AdamsNames called Meridian TLD. Any legal entity or natural person may register a .vg domain address. It is not necessary to have a residence or company headquarters on one of the British Virgin Islands.

Use

The British Virgin Islands are both a popular tourist destination and a location for the offshore financial industry. There are therefore many financial companies that have a head office or branch in the archipelago off the coast of Peru in the Atlantic Ocean. However, many tourist centres on the islands are also advertised with the ending .vg. Likewise, many private individuals who have moved to the islands or were born there because of their job use the possibility to register a website with .vg. It is mainly the tourism sector in which the population of black African descent, which makes up 90 percent of the population, is active. After all, about 2 million tourists come to the islands every year. For this reason it is not surprising that there are many travel reports about the British Virgin Islands, some of which are published on a website with this domain extension.

Meaning

From an international perspective, the importance of the .vg domain ending is rather low. There are many companies from the financial sector that - if they have a branch in the British Virgin Islands - also place a link to the .vg website on their main homepage. However, this plays only a very minor role in normal business. Also, not many private individuals use this domain extension, as many do not have access to the WWW at all.
