Stars on YouTube, Instagram & Co.: How do you earn money?

It looks so simple: Upload a video of you putting on your makeup here, film a little bit there while you play a video game. The YouTubers that have made it seem to really, literally, make their money playing.

career aspiration: YouTube Star

It's no wonder that young people in particular are thinking more and more about taking advantage of this concept and becoming a YouTube star. Who wouldn't want to earn a lot of money with what they really like to do?
Of course, you have to have some skills in this area as well. Of course, you have to be able to film with a mobile phone or even better with a real video camera, be video-capable and later be able to edit the films in a video editing program.
But these skills can also be acquired with the necessary interest. And we all want to look good anyway, don't we? So the hurdles aren't too high to begin with. And so many people, especially young people, set out to become a YouTube star.
But not only teenagers earn money with their videos. Even a self-sufficient person, who films everything that grows in the garden and tells how to do it, can earn good money with his videos. But there are also ladies who like to crochet and knit and earn a nice sum of money.

The funny thing is that money is not only earned with make-up and video games. Some YouTube channels make little films with their Playmobil characters and tell stories from life. This is exactly what children love and that's how the creators of these films get an incredible number of hits.

Contrary to popular opinion, age does not play too great a role. Rather, it is the love of one's own topic that makes it possible to build up a fan community on YouTube and thus make adolescents and pensioners a YouTube star in equal measure.

How do YouTuber earn money now?

The more subscribers you get on YouTube, the more money you earn. And you don't earn your money per subscriber. Rather, you earn by sending new videos to your subscribers and having them watch the new videos. If the YouTuber uploads a new video and sends it immediately to a few hundred thousand subscribers, it will be viewed by those interested. Everyone who watches the video makes sure that the YouTuber makes money. Because anyone who allows their videos to be preceded by an advertisement from Google's partners earns money.
The earnings depend on the topic and the advertised search terms. If a Google and thus YouTube partner bids 1.50 EUR for a search term and thus for the click on his advertisement, the YouTuber gets a share of it. How much this is exactly can only be estimated, as Google does not publish exact figures here. It is assumed that Google receives 45% of the revenue, the YouTuber 55%.
But there are even more possibilities to earn money with his videos. On YouTube there is the possibility to add a description under each video.
In the box, all the links you insert are clickable. So here are often Affiliate Links inserted. The YouTuber names or recommends products in his videos, the users click on the links offered and the creator of the video receives a commission. This can also be a very lucrative business model, depending on how many subscribers and thus traffic you can generate for your videos.
And this also brings us to another opportunity to make money with his videos. The creator of the videos in his videos can deliberately recommend products that are provided to him by the companies free of charge. Often he is also paid for this additionally.
As an influencer you can also earn good money. The companies assume that if their product is advertised by someone with a high reach (i.e. a large number of subscribers), it will become better known and more popular. So again, you need enough subscribers to be interesting for large companies.

The possibility of achieving high revenues depends on the number of subscribers

All possibilities to earn money on YouTube stand and fall with the traffic. If you don't have enough subscribers, you won't find enough people who watch your video and therefore neither affiliate Marketing nor earn money by displaying the ads. Only those who manage the rocky road to a significant number of subscribers will become YouTube stars - because only then will you generate enough traffic and thus enough comments to also slide up in the organic search.
A fan base is therefore essential to make it big on YouTube. But if you show enough stamina, you can still - or especially today - make it.
If there are a lot of YouTubers in the English-speaking world, it is still quite limited in Germany - and the market is far from being saturated.
So if you have time and enjoy making videos, you can build up a fan base.

How long does it take to earn money on YouTube?

Again, it depends on how much content, in this case videos, you can produce and advertise. Of course, a company that has a marketing budget will be much more successful than a small lone fighter who produces, cuts, uploads, optimizes and finally distributes his video on other social networks.
So, depending on how much time you can spare, you should plan on a few months or even a few years until you achieve significant results.
For this reason, teenagers often become YouTube stars. They are not (yet) interested in money, they simply enjoy sharing and showing others what they are doing. In the business world, of course, it looks different. You have to make your business idea profitable as quickly as possible.

How to reach real subscribers with advertising?

If you start small it is very difficult to find real subscribers who are interested in the new videos. On Youtube you can therefore advertise your channel directly and on other Youtube sites the thematically appropriate advertising for your videos. The costs for a real subscriber are between 3 and 5 Euro advertising expenses. But then you have real followers who are interested in the videos. Unfortunately only a few sites are pushed by Youtube, i.e. their videos are then placed free of charge on thematically matching sites. This is usually only possible with channels that have been active for a few years and have a certain number of subscribers who react to the videos and, for example, give likes and comments. As a newcomer you have little chance to get free advertising from Youtube within a short time. This is independent of the content you publish.

Conclusion

It is possible for anyone to become a "YouTube Star". However, you have to bring along a good portion of time and not be dependent on the money you can earn there. If you manage to gather subscribers around you, it is possible to earn a significant income with YouTube.
The good thing is that the income increases with the number of subscribers and therefore one can confidently say that there really is no limit here. But the entry to earn money is very high and is only worthwhile from about 100,000 real subscribers.
