The .hiv domain was founded by Berlin-based start-up dotHIV in 2014 and aims to raise awareness of the dangerous disease HIV.
With its domain extension, the company has set out to combat the lack of public awareness regarding the topic of AIDS and HIV. The address line of the browser is used here as a simple means of communication and functions as a virtual stumbling block.
Many websites around the world can thus do their part to draw attention to the disease AIDS. At the same time, there is also a charitable purpose behind the domain. For every visitor to the .hiv domain, a small donation is forwarded to various AIDS aid projects. The company also donates surpluses from the sale of the domains to other aid projects.
One year after its introduction, websites with this domain were already registered in 35 different countries. Among them were also many well-known German companies such as Paulaner Bräu or SIXT. As a result, 37,000 euros were already generated in the first few months through the sale of the domains, which were donated to the aid organization WE-ACTx for Hope from Rwanda.
Non-profit organizations, which are active in the field of AIDS aid, even get the domain extension free of charge. Here the donations are generated, as already mentioned, by the page impressions. In the meantime, the rights of dotHIV were sold to the US-American company Uniregistry Corp. The charitable motives have of course not changed.
