The city of Berlin is the capital of Germany. With more than 3.5 million inhabitants, the city is the German city with the most inhabitants. The capital is considered in many areas as the center of all of Germany (or even beyond the borders) and is one of the most innovative and smartest cities in the Federal Republic of Germany. In the fields of politics, media, culture and science, the city counts as a well-known cosmopolitan city, which attracts many tourists. The city is also advanced in technical progress and available internet line. Thus, regular internet usage has been a reality in the city for a long time. Moreover, the capital has stable and reliable internet lines, so the internet is used a lot, and the idea for a common domain extension came up.
The domain extension is especially intended for businesses, companies, organizations and individuals who have a strong and special relationship to the city of Berlin. The independent top-level domain serves the local community in the city and should also create a better identity of people and companies to the city on the Internet. It is hoped that the domain will bring residents closer together and strengthen the sense of community among Berliners. It improves communication and makes it easier for people to interact with each other. The city as a whole should become more attractive for everyone through the domain.
Since 18 March 2014, every Berliner can apply for a city top-level domain. The allocation is completely unrestricted for residents of the city. Anyone who lives in the city can apply for the domain extension .berlin on the Internet as a legal entity or natural person. Apart from the place of residence in the capital, there are no further restrictions for the allocation.
As of early 2018, around 55,000 domains had been registered with the domain extension.
