A simple business model: content marketing for sole traders

Without content is a website worth nothing. It does not matter what kind of content it is. Content can be text as well as images, videos or audio files such as podcasts. The important thing is that this content answers the questions of the users. And if the content meets exactly this criterion, it is valuable content that ranks high in the search engines.

Is content marketing really that simple?

Yes and no. As a search engine, Google is committed to providing the best possible results to its customers, the searchers. The best results are those that answer the question that the user has at the time. So if you put well-researched and detailed texts on your website that help the user you get sent by Google for free, chances are you've gained a new customer, newsletter subscriber or fan. This happens automatically. Once you have good texts on your website, they will be indexed by Google and you will receive visitors who search your topics.

The only problem is: How do you get really good texts on your website? And above all: How do you get good texts on your website as quickly as possible, so that you get visitors from Google as quickly as possible? Many things can be accelerated, content marketing is only one of them to a limited extent.
Because depending on how often you put new content on your website, Google will come to your website in more or less large intervals to index it.
So a little patience is needed until content marketing really works.
In addition, of course, you have to answer questions that are also being searched for. It is therefore of little use if you, as a car parts dealer, report on the latest summer tyres when winter has just begun. Then this content will probably not be available until summer.

So how does one proceed with content marketing?

Before you write as many texts as possible to achieve quick results, you should do some thorough research. This means that you need to know your customers well. With which questions do they come to you? How do they help you? In principle, the following applies: you will otherwise advise your customers directly on site and can answer any questions they may still have. On the Internet, you must be prepared for all eventualities with your text. All questions your customer might have on a topic should be answered in the text. And the more thoroughly you do this, the more your visitor will trust you and order from you.
However, this process may take some time. So you're writing really good, detailed content that ranks high in Google because it answers important questions in your area of interest. Google sends you the right visitors. The visitor also likes what he reads. He continues to browse your website, finds more interesting information and finally signs up for your newsletter. So you have already taken the first hurdle. With the help of your good content, you have established a relationship of trust with your visitor without any further ado. He trusts you so much that he gives you his personal data such as his email address and his name. With the help of an autoresponder provided by your email provider, you can continue to send your customer information automatically.
So you can inform him/her when you publish a new article, you can also set up an email sequence in advance, which will send your new subscriber more free and above all valuable information at certain intervals (e.g. one day after registration, then the fifth day after registration, etc.). In one of the emails (or in all of them) you can refer to your products or services.
Since you have already established a relationship of trust with your customer, he will be much more inclined to buy from you or contact you.
In this way you have gained a new customer without having to do anything else. As so often in internet marketing, the creation of the content, the email sequence, etc. is labor intensive. Once this tunnel is built, you have the opportunity to win new customers in your sleep, so to speak.

Why doesn't everyone do content marketing if it is so effective?

In principle, every company that builds a website should rely on content marketing. Because in time, this is a very effective way to win new customers. The only problem is that it is very labor-intensive at first. Of course you can also have texts written. However, this does not save you from having to put the texts on your own website and in the autoresponder.
In addition, most entrepreneurs first have to familiarise themselves with the subject matter. Because not everyone knows content management system and an email provider.
Once these hurdles have been overcome, content marketing is a very effective way to win new customers.
In any case, the best thing about content marketing is that it works completely passively once the content is created.

Should one now invest time and money in content marketing?

Absolutely! Creating content for a website is not an expense, it is an investment in the future of your business. It doesn't matter if you want to win new customers through content marketing or simply want to inform existing customers on your website. They build a relationship with you and exactly this basis creates trust.
So the customers you attract or already have will always first visit your website or contact your company when they need help. Also make sure that content is always valid. Invest in content that does not go out of fashion and will still be sought after in a few years. This is the only way to expand your marketing with the right content strategy. Your Shop will inevitably grow. However, content marketing needs time, as shown. The indexing of the texts by Google and the approach of new customers does not happen in a few days. However, if you consistently pursue and implement this goal for a few months, you will inevitably be successful with content marketing.
However, you should create or have created 8-12 new texts for your website per month to be successful with content marketing.
