mu-domain Domain

The domain extension .mu is the country-specific top-level domain of the state of Mauritius. The domain extension was introduced in Mauritius on October 6th in autumn 1995. The country-specific domain is administered by the company "Internet Direct", which manages the domain from Port Louis and processes and accepts registrations.
Mauritius is a small archipelago in the south-western Indian Ocean and is located almost 900 kilometres to the east of the island Madagascar. The parliamentary republic counts several islands. The capital Port Louis is located on the main island Mauritius. The population of almost 1,3 million inhabitants is growing steadily by more than 0,6% per year. The technical infrastructure of the archipelago is continuously expanded. Thus, more and more inhabitants get a functioning internet connection. But this complete and complete expansion will still take many years.
The top-level domain is distributed to the applicants without any restrictions. To obtain the domain extension .mu, no residence or stay on the island of Mauritius is required. The allocation is completely unrestricted. A new domain is registered by the Mauritius Network Information Centre (MUNIC), which is directly connected to Mauritius.
The top-level domain .mu also offers other second-level domains for registration. The following second-level domains are available for registration and are currently in use on the Internet:
.com.: for commercial companies and organisations
.net.: for Internet companies and network units
.org.: for non-profit organizations
.edu.: for schools, universities and other educational institutions
.ac.: for academic purposes
.gov.: for the government and government-related enterprises
.co.: also for commercial companies (in the meantime this second-level domain can no longer be registered)
.or.: for non-profit organisations and purposes (also this second level domain can no longer be registered with the Mauritius Network Information Centre)
Internationally, the domain extension .mu is hardly used. On trading platforms the domain is rarely sold to interested customers. Also numbers of registered pages with this domain are not officially collected.
However, various music producers have started to use this domain internationally to refer to music (MUsik). Furthermore, some museums use this domain for their websites (MUseum).
