.ru is the country-specific top-level domain (ccTLD) of the country Russia. The seventh most popular domain worldwide was launched on April 7, 1994. The domain is administered by the Coordination Center for TLD RU (or short: RU-CENTER).
Russia/the Russian Federation is the largest state in the world. The country ruled by Vladimir Putin, is one of the countries with the lowest population density per one square kilometer. Nevertheless, the state is one of the countries with the most frequent and longest Internet use in Europe.
The Coordination Center for DLD is also responsible for the allocation of the domain. In order to obtain a domain, the applicant must be able to provide the Coordination Center with a copy of their identity card or an extract from the commercial register. Any natural or legal person may order such a domain from the Coordination Center. No residence or stay in the largest state on earth is required for this purpose; the allocation is completely unrestricted, regardless of the place of residence. A successful registration of the domain takes on average no longer than three working days.
In addition to the .ru domain, two other domains are more widely used in Russia. The domain .su (Soviet Union) is still in use today and is even still registered. The Russian Research Institute for the Development of Public Networks has continued to register .su domains free of charge since 2002. The alternative domain .??, is the Cyrillic spelling of the domain ending and stands for ??????????. ????????? (Russian Federation). However, this has not yet received much attention in Russia.

With more than 5.5 million registered pages (as of 2017), the Russian domain .ru is one of the most popular and frequently used domains worldwide. On average, more than 8 thousand new pages with the Russian domain .ru are added in one month.
