How important is memory in web hosting?
If you are looking for a suitable web host, you have to consider numerous key data. Hosting rates include various conditions and services. Many people pay little attention to the RAM - but it is of enormous importance. Well-known content management systems depend on sufficient RAM, as they do not function properly if the webhoster is not powerful enough.
Web hosting packages: Pay attention to the RAM!
If you book a webhosting package, you should make sure that you have enough RAM. The working memory of webhosting packages is of immense importance - the script language PHP needs extensive resources to function without errors. This also depends on the performance and scope of the content management system in question. If the working memory is too small, performance problems can occur. Complete script aborts are not uncommon: These lead to error messages and a poor functioning of the website. The working memory should be checked carefully before completing a web hosting package and increased if necessary.
WordPress, Joomla and TYPO3 - the three CMS giants
Probably the best known content management systems are Joomla, WordPress and TYPO3. These have very different requirements for the availability of RAM. WordPress is officially satisfied with 32 megabytes - the latest version now requires 64 megabytes. From our point of view, a stable operation is guaranteed with 128 megabytes. With Joomla there is no official information. The minimum seems to be in the range of 64 megabytes. A smooth operation is probably only possible with larger Internet pages from 128 megabytes. TYPO3 is the front runner of the three content management systems and requires a minimum of 256 megabytes of RAM. Larger websites may well need a little more memory. We generally recommend booking a little more memory than necessary. The requirements of the individual content management systems depend on their individual design. The integration of plugins and an increased use of the database can lead to significantly higher requirements.
Main memory: An important component for content management systems
Who owns a server, can vary the available memory via the htaccess data as desired. To do this, the line "php_value memory_limit 256M" must be inserted in the htaccess file. The value "256M" can of course be adjusted as desired. Individual CMS, such as WordPress, allow a direct setting of the memory in a config file. Simply add "define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M') to the wp-config.php. A change is also possible via the php.ini file, but this can not always be used - especially if "conventional" Webspace is used. With most providers these values cannot be changed freely. In summary it must be mentioned that modern content management systems make comparatively high demands on the main memory. Therefore, when selecting a suitable web hoster, the available RAM should be taken into account.
With these providers, up to 1024MB of RAM is available.
